Brazilian surfer João Chianca, known as “Chumbinho”, suffered a serious accident during a training session in the waves of Pipeline, in Hawaii, on Sunday (3).

Born in Saquarema, the 23-year-old surfer fell from a wave and was thrown head first towards the coral bottom. He passed out while he was still in the water, needing to be rescued by surfers and lifeguards who were there.

Videos published on social media show the moment the rescue takes place.

The Brazilian suffered a cut on the back of his head and went to a hospital in the Honolulu region, where he was admitted for observation.

Lucas Chianca, Chumbinho’s brother, reassured fans and stated on social media that the surfer is stable and conscious.

In the 2023 season of the professional surfing circuit, Chianca reached the last stage, in the waves of Lower Trestles, in California, still with a chance of winning the title, which ended up in the hands of Filipe Toledo from São Paulo.

Chianca ended the world championship in fourth place in the general classification and also secured a place at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Two-time world champion Filipe Toledo is also qualified for the competition, which will be in Teahupoo, Tahiti, an archipelago that is part of French territory.
