South Africa has withdrawn its bid to host the 2027 women’s football World Cup, the country’s football association (Safa) said on Friday (24). South Africa was among the four bids confirmed by FIFA, but the country will focus on submitting a bid for the 2031 tournament.

“We felt it was best to present a well-prepared bid for the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup and ensure we put our best foot forward, rather than producing a rushed submission”said the CEO of Safa, Lydia Monyepao, on the association’s official website.

The remaining applications are a joint proposal from Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, one from Brazil and another joint application from Mexico and the United States.

The FIFA Congress will decide the next tournament venue on May 17, 2024.

Australia and New Zealand held the 2023 tournament, which was won by Spain. The USA, Mexico and Canada will jointly host the men’s football World Cup in 2026.
