The auction house Sotherby’s announced, this Thursday (14), the value obtained for a lot of six shirts worn by Messi in the last World Cup. The package with pieces from Argentina’s title campaign at the 2022 World Cup was sold for US$7.8 million (just over R$38 million at current prices).

The auction opened on November 30 and received three bids, but there is no information on who won the six shirts.

The shirts were used in games against Saudi Arabia and Mexico (group stage), Australia (round of 16), Netherlands (quarter-finals), Croatia (semi-final) and France (final).

The value was below what Sotherby’s estimated. The house expected a value of US$10 million (R$49.1 million), but classified the auction as “one of the highest prices for a sports collectible item”.

The most expensive sports item ever sold at auction is a jersey worn by Michael Jordan. The uniform of the greatest basketball player of all time, used in the 1998 NBA Finals, was sold for US$10.1 million (R$49.3 million) in September 2022.
