Conmebol drew this Monday (18) the group stage clashes of the Copa Libertadores 2024. With seven teams from Brazil in the competition, there was the possibility of national duels in the first phase, but no club from the country ended up crossing paths.

Of the country’s representatives, only Botafogo and Atlético-MG were not seeded and could fall into the groups of Fluminense, São Paulo, Grêmio, Flamengo and Palmeiras, but they escaped the crosses.

Current champion of the tournament, Fluminense is in Group A, alongside Cerro Porteño (Paraguay), Alianza Lima (Peru) and Colo Colo (Chile).

Winner of the competition in 1981, 2019 and 2022, Flamengo fell into Group E, along with Bolívar (Bolivia), Millonarios (Colombia) and Palestino (Chile).

Palmeiras, champion in 1999, 2020 and 2021, is in Key F, alongside Independiente Del Valle (Ecuador), San Lorenzo (Argentina) and Liverpool (Uruguay).

Botafogo is in Group D, while Atlético Mineiro ended up in Group G (check out how each group ended up below).

The first round of the group stage is scheduled to take place between April 2nd and 4th. The final is scheduled for November 30th, in Buenos Aires, but the stadium has not yet been defined.

In Libertadores, the 32 teams are divided into eight groups, with four clubs each. After a round-robin match, the top two advance to the knockout stage, while the third-placed teams go to the Copa Sudamericana.

The winner of the Libertadores will earn US$23 million (R$115 million) just for winning the decision.

Each victory in the Libertadores group stage will also yield US$330,000 (R$1.6 million).

Corinthians meet opponents in the South American Championship

Also this Monday (18), Conmebol drew the groups for the Copa Sudamericana, which this year will feature seven Brazilians in its group stage, including Corinthians. The team from São Paulo will be the head of Group F, which will also feature Argentinos Juniors (Argentina), Racing (Uruguay) and Nacional (Paraguay).

In 2023, Corinthians and Argentinos Juniors were together in the same Libertadores group. In Argentina, the two clubs played out a goalless draw. At the Neo Química Arena, the visitors won 1-0. Both results were crucial to Corinthians’ decline in the group stage.

Cruzeiro, Internacional, Fortaleza, Athletico Paranaense, Cuiabá and Red Bull Bragantino are the other Brazilian teams in the second most important club competition in South America and who met their opponents tonight.

Of the six, Fortaleza should have the most difficult path, in Group D, with Boca Juniors (Argentina), Nacional Potosí (Bolivia) and Sportinvo Trinidense (Paraguay).

The first round will be played between April 2nd and 4th, while the last group stage games will be played from May 28th to 30th.

In the Copa Sudamericana, only the first placed team in each group advances directly to the knockout stage. The teams that come in second will have to face the third placed teams in the Libertadores groups, in playoffs, which will be played on the 16th and 25th of July. The winners of these duels complete the group that will play in the round of 16.

The clashes will be defined through a draw, which will pit the first placed teams against those who win the playoffs.

The round of 16 is scheduled to be played on August 13th and 22nd. The quarterfinals will be between September 17th and 26th. The semi-finals are on October 23rd and 30th. The decision, in a single game, will be on November 23rd, in a location yet to be defined by Conmebol.
