Russia said on Tuesday it will appeal a decision that stripped the country of an Olympic gold medal after the Kremlin condemned a doping suspension against teenage figure skater Kamila Valieva as politically motivated.
On Monday (29), the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) suspended Valieva for four years for doping, starting in December 2021, a decision that stripped the Russian Olympic Committee of its gold medal in the team event at the Olympic Games. “We do not agree with these decisions – neither with the court’s decision, nor with the federation’s decision [de patinação no gelo]. We don’t accept them”said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, a day after he described the CAS decision as political. “If there is any opportunity to challenge and continue to defend the rights of our athletes, they must be mobilized to the end.”
Following Peskov’s comments, the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) said its lawyers were preparing to challenge the International Skating Union’s (ISU) revision of the rankings in the team event, which leaves Russia without a gold medal, but with bronze.
“We rely on the fact that, according to the current applicable ISU rules, the consequences of sanctions against an individual athlete, in this case Kamila Valieva, cannot serve as a basis for reviewing the results of the team event”said the ROC.
Valieva tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine, which prevents angina, at the Russian national championships in December 2021. The result was only released after she competed in the team event in Beijing.
His team said the positive test could have been due to a mix-up with his grandfather’s heart medication.
But the CAS panel ruled there was no scope for Valieva, who was 15 at the time, to be treated more leniently than an adult who had committed an anti-doping rule violation.
In its review of the Beijing results, the ISU downgraded the Russian figure skating team from gold to bronze following Valieva’s disqualification.
It was assumed that Canada, which finished fourth, would be promoted to bronze, but the Russians’ total score, even after Valieva’s marks were erased, was still one point better than that of the Canadians, the ISU announced.
