What is it like to be a woman and arrive with a backpack, ropes and carabiners in Jordan and Saudi Arabia, countries that still maintain many legal restrictions on female sports? Or set the goal of climbing the Michinmauida glacier, in Chilean Patagonia, in a wheelchair? The answers to these questions can be found in the films “Opening the Path”, by Spanish director Juan Miguel Ponce Martínez, and “In Search of My Summit”, by Chilean Carlos Pérez, two of the 18 films included in the Rio Mountain Festival program, between the 18th and 22nd of October, at the CCBB (Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil), in Rio de Janeiro.
The event was originally created by Alexandre Diniz in 2001 as the International Mountain Film Festival, presenting the best films from the Banff Mountain Film Festival, a Canadian festival. Three years later, the Competitive Exhibition was created, with the aim of encouraging the national production of films about adventure sports, nature and mountain culture, and space was opened for other sports linked to nature, such as cycling, sailing and skiing, between others.
In this edition, the curatorship of Jéssica Marinho sought to include not only the beautiful landscapes that are expected when filming these themes, but social and environmental issues that permeate sports, with emphasis on the presence of women in the field. “Through original films like these, we want to shed light on issues that are so relevant in our society. We seek to bring narrative diversity and encourage more and more women to participate in sports”, says Jéssica.
As for Diniz, “by bringing current and necessary themes to the festival, through original films with deeper narratives, we increasingly encourage respect for nature and adventure sports, which must be accessible to everyone”.
A new feature of this year’s edition will be the screening of seven feature films. “This is the first time this has happened. Last year, we only had one, which was the winning film. This represents a change for the Rio Mountain Festival”, says Alexandre Diniz
The films were selected from 100 productions that the curators received based on criteria such as narrative, image quality, photography and sound. Among them, productions from Brazil, Italy, Austria, France and Chile. “We will have 4 Brazilian films, 3 of which are feature films, which shows our potential in the production of sports films in nature”, celebrates Diniz.
In addition to the films, female representation will also include a talk by biologist, scientist and professor Clau Lizieri, author of the Ciência nas Trilhas Collection, who will talk about the children’s books she has written that feature the character Lizi, a scientist who practices mountaineering, passionate about nature. The books talk to children about preserving the environment through stories that take place in mountainous lands and plains, from Brazilian biomes to Antarctica.
