Hospital São Camilo’s position of not carrying out the IUD (intrauterine device) insertion procedure, tubal ligations and elective vasectomies due to religious values is not followed by all health entities linked to churches.

Hospital Adventista de São Paulo, for example, participated in a campaign by Pró-PM (Associação Beneficente Pró-Saúde Policial Militar do Estado de São Paulo) in which it performed 500 vasectomies in 2022, in the context of blue November, of health care masculine.

The Hospital Universitário Evangélico Mackenzie, in Curitiba, has a program for placing copper IUDs, as well as for performing tubal ligations and vasectomies.

According to the entity, which serves more than 90% of its patients through the SUS (Unified Health System), the tubal ligation program has a specific outpatient clinic, in which non-pregnant patients undergo the process electively. Pregnant women who request surgery 60 days before the birth of the baby, as required by law, undergo the operation postpartum.

“Family planning is fundamental to women’s health and is part of the hospital’s routine, which above all respects the law”, said the institution in a statement.

The PUC Hospital (Pontifical Catholic University) in Campinas, in turn, reported that IUD placement is carried out in primary and secondary public health care and that the hospital is focused on high complexity care. He also said that the agreement he maintains with the SUS does not cover the procedure.

Santa Marcelina, which in addition to the hospital in Itaquera, in the east zone of São Paulo, manages several public facilities, stated that at the moment it would not take a position on the matter.

The Confederation of Santas Casas de Misericórdia, Hospitals and Philanthropic Entities (CMB) informed in a note that “the placement of an IUD is an elective procedure and each institution is free to define its qualifications to carry out this type of procedure”.

The confederation explained that it does not guide hospitals on which services or procedures to carry out, either through the SUS or in contracts with health operators, and there is no national or regional guideline in this regard.

For CMB, each institution has its role and strategic purpose in the national health care network, with the provision of services agreed with public managers.

“The São Camilo Group is an associate of CMB and a reference in the philanthropic health sector, due to the importance and relevance of the services provided to Brazilians in different corners of this country, through the SUS”, he stated.
