Pharmacist gives tips on ‘medicine kit’ for holiday travel

Manaus (AM) – Whether by car, plane, bus or boat, traveling is always an exciting experience. However, health does not take a vacation and it is important to be prepared for any eventuality. Having a well-equipped ‘travel pharmacy’ is essential to deal with small problems that may arise, or when you are already undergoing treatment and need to continue it even when away from home.

The pharmaceutical supervisor of the Santo Remédio network, Bruna Barros, gives some tips on how to organize this very important ‘kit’. “First of all, make a list of the medications you or your family may need during the trip. This should include both prescription and over-the-counter medications for common conditions, such as headache, fever, stomach pain, allergies and colds”, advises the professional.

Some examples of medications that may be useful in these situations are: analgesics and antipyretics, medicines for abdominal pain, antiallergics, antacids and medicines for gas and constipation.

Another important tip is to be aware of the health rules of the place you are going, especially if the trip is abroad. This is because some substances may be considered illegal outside Brazil, even if they are prescribed medicines. Therefore, it is advisable to check the travel rules and customs regulations of the country you are traveling to.

Some countries, for example, require that medications be accompanied by a medical prescription in English or the local language, with the generic name of the active ingredient, the dosage, pharmaceutical form and duration of treatment. Other countries may prohibit or restrict the entry of medicines that contain codeine, morphine, pseudoephedrine or cannabis derivatives. The tip is to check the website of the embassy or consulate of the destination country before traveling, to avoid problems at customs or immigration.

How to take

The packaging of medicines is another factor on the list of precautions when preparing the ‘travel medicine’. They must be kept in their original packaging, with labels intact. This not only helps with identification, but is also useful if the traveler needs to go through security checks. Additionally, it’s a good idea to make sure medications are in a cool, dry place to prevent damage.

Bruna Barros also highlights that a basic first aid kit can be very useful when traveling, especially when traveling by car or bus. It may include bandages, antiseptics, scissors, tweezers and a thermometer.

This not only saves space, but also avoids the possibility of taking unnecessary medications”, advises the expert. It is also important to check the expiration date of medicines, and not mix them in the same packaging, as this can cause confusion or contamination.

Bruna Barros also remembers that, in case of doubts, it is always important to seek help from a pharmaceutical professional. According to law 13.021/14, every drugstore in Brazil must maintain a qualified professional in this area throughout its opening hours, to serve the public.

Finally, remember that medications are only for emergencies or proven needs. “If you experience any serious or persistent symptoms, see a doctor as soon as possible, and do not self-medicate without guidance. Your health is your most precious asset, and must be taken care of responsibly.”
