State of SP surpasses the mark of 300 deaths from dengue – 04/16/2024 – Health

The state of São Paulo reached the mark of 305 deaths from dengue this Tuesday (16). Another 618 deaths are under investigation.

In total, the state has 600,135 confirmed cases of the disease and 1,269,410 notified.

The data is from the State Department of Health’s monitoring panel until April 16th.

Of the total cases, 7,048 represent an alarm signal and 749 progressed to the severe stage of the disease.

Some of the warning signs are: intense and continuous abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding of mucous membranes, drop in blood pressure, enlarged liver, lethargy or irritability, accumulation of fluids in body cavities (ascites, pleural effusion, pericardial effusion) , progressive increase in hematocrit and postural hypotension (dizziness when standing up).

To date, the city of São Paulo records the highest number of deaths from the disease (39), followed by Guarulhos (26), in the metropolitan region, Jacareí (20) and Taubaté (15).

Only 10 of the 96 administrative districts in the city of São Paulo do not have a high incidence of dengue. The incidence considered to be declared an epidemic, according to the WHO (World Health Organization), is greater than 300 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants.

Across the country, as of this Tuesday (16), 1,385 deaths and 3,289,639 probable cases of dengue fever were recorded in 2024.

Despite the emergency situation, the country has a low demand for vaccination. Because of this, the Ministry of Health increased the number of municipalities that should receive vaccines.

According to the ministry, 13 Brazilian states are experiencing a stable scenario in the incidence of dengue, and the Federal District and eight other units of the federation have a downward trend. The data was released last Tuesday (16). São Paulo is one of the places with a stable incidence.

Today, the immunization of children aged 10 to 14 years against dengue fever is recommended in Brazil, according to WHO recommendation criteria.
