Announced last Wednesday (27) as Atlético-MG’s first reinforcement for 2024, midfielder Gustavo Scarpa will return to Brazil this Friday (29), after a year in European football. This will be the chance to regain its shine, overshadowed on the Old Continent.

Star of the 2022 Brasileirão, when he played for Palmeiras, the 29-year-old player will arrive in São Paulo and, in the next few days, will arrive in Belo Horizonte to have his first contact with the Galo board.

Bought from Nottingham Forest, in England, for around R$27 million, Scarpa will sign with Galo for four seasons. Payment to the English club will be made in installments.

Signed by Forest at the end of last year, the midfielder did not perform as expected at the English club and ended up loaned to Olympiacos, in Greece. Both clubs are owned by Greek Evangelos Marinakis. For Forest, there were 10 matches played and one assist. For Olympiacos, there were 11 games played. In both, the new Galo player did not find the net.

Lack of position

Throughout 2023, one of the main needs of the Atletico squad was, precisely, a player with the characteristics of Gustavo Scarpa. An original midfielder, he arrives at Galo to be a starter in the team led by coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, with whom he worked at Palmeiras.

With Palmeiras, he won two Paulistas (2020 and 2022), two Brazilians (2018 and 2022), one Copa do Brasil (2020), two Libertadores (2020 and 2021) and one Recopa Sul-Americana (2022). In total, 233 matches were played, with 136 wins, 44 goals scored and 59 assists.
