The new general director of the Federal Highway Police (PRF), Antônio Fernando Oliveira, stated that the corporation “has no party” and will not “compact” with attacks against democracy. The speech was made this Wednesday (8) during Oliveira’s inauguration ceremony.

“The PRF, as a state body, has no party and will not condone any attack against democracy,” he said. The PRF’s performance was questioned after the corporation carried out operations on the roads on the day of the second round of the 2022 elections, under the command of Silvinei Vasques.

“But, in recent years, isolated acts, some abhorrent, have cast a veil of distrust over the PRF. A reputation polished over decades was suddenly damaged and tarnished. Therefore, recalling [Martin] Luther King, the Federal Highway Police is faced with ‘the fierce urgency of now’. We need to do what we do best, and rescue our citizen police essence. Because citizenship is just another name for democracy”, declared Oliveira.

The new head of the PRF classified the acts of vandalism in Brasília, which complete one month today, as “one of the most deplorable episodes” in Brazil. “It remains evident that the defense of republican ideals cannot be merely rhetorical. It must be practiced daily in every action, gesture, word,” he stated.

“The PRF has the mission of guaranteeing free circulation, public safety, and bringing order and citizenship to thousands of municipalities along the highways”, said Oliveira. The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, participated in the inauguration ceremony.
