The legal group Prerrogativas, which is close to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), released a statement criticizing the federal government’s determination not to hold events commemorating the 60th anniversary of the 1964 coup.

“The determination to remain silent in the face of the 1964 military coup is unacceptable. It goes against our history and offends the struggle and memory of so many in defense of democracy”, says the note signed by the collegiate’s coordinator, Marco Aurélio de Carvalho.

As the Panel showed, Lula ordered the cancellation of ceremonies and events planned to mark the anniversary. The aim is not to offend the Armed Forces at a time when tension is growing with the revelation of military participation in a coup plot at the end of the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government.

Prerogativas says that remembering the coup is important in view of the facts that have been revealed by the Federal Police investigation against Bolsonaro and his allies.

“A few years after the coup against President Dilma and the Bolsonarist attempt on January 8, 2023, ignoring the past favors the resurgence of new setbacks, as is the case with the campaign to forgive the unspeakable and his accomplices”, says the note, which also calls for the act in defense of democracy that will take place on March 23rd in Largo de São Francisco, in São Paulo.

Prerogativas defends the arrest of Bolsonaro and Admiral Almir Garnier, former commander of the Navy, for having shown themselves willing to collaborate in an attempt at a democratic rupture that would prevent Lula from taking office.

The group also released a statement criticizing the Clube Militar do Rio de Janeiro for intending to celebrate the anniversary of the coup.

“Prerogativas expresses its vehement repudiation of the Military Club for having the audacity and cynicism to celebrate the military coup of 1964, which decreed the civil-military dictatorship that governed Brazil for more than two decades and plunged it into obscurantism.”
