A Datafolha survey released over the weekend outlined an ideological map of the country and showed that half of the electorate (52%) believes in the possibility of Brazil becoming a communist regime. Among those who voted for Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the second round of 2022, this proportion reaches 73%.
The survey, with a margin of error of two percentage points, heard 2,010 people, in 112 cities, between June 12th and 14th.
The speech of the former president and allies has always pejoratively associated communism with rivals —reviving the idea of the ghost of that political regime, present in the country for decades and used, among others, by the military dictatorship. Contemporary adherence to it found an echo in the coup attacks on the headquarters of the Three Powers on January 8.
In depositions to which the Sheet had access, bolsonaristas arrested at the time and accused of involvement in the actions mention the intention of achieving a military coup to prevent communism, sexual slavery and the end of the family.
This Thursday’s Café da Manhã (6) analyzes how communism was and still is used in Brazilian politics as a threat and discusses the reasons behind adherence to this discourse. The episode interviews historian Carlos Fico, a professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
