The 4 years and 6 months in prison for Daniel Alves, found guilty of raping a young woman at the end of 2022 in Barcelona, ​​opened a debate about the size of the sentence and the meaning of the sentence. The defenses of the former player and the victim announced this Thursday (22) that they must appeal, to, respectively, try to reduce and extend the prison time.

Daniel Alves’ process has a series of symbolisms in Spain. He was one of the first public figures convicted under the Só Sim É Sim law, which deals with sexual crimes; and the case shed light on the Não Calem protocol, which helped collect evidence, considered robust, that the former player committed sexual violence.

Throughout the process, Daniel changed his version at least five times — in the last one, he spoke of a consensual relationship and that he was drunk. The defense adopted the strategy of paying compensation to the victim to reduce the sentence. The former player will be able to request a sentence progression to parole in just under two years.
