Podcast: how the climate crisis affects children – Folha – 12/12/2023 – Podcasts

COP28, the United Nations climate conference, comes to an end this Tuesday (12) with expectations about the content of the final document — especially with regard to fossil fuels. Last year, the text mentioned children’s rights for the first time, and in this edition they sought to increase their participation.

In Dubai, they even participated in an event to remember that they are the generation that will feel the effects of the planet’s warming the most. A report by United Nations agencies released before the conference drew attention to the fact that the effects of extreme events on maternal and child health are being neglected and underreported.

According to Unicef, 1 billion children live at extremely high climate risk in the world; In Brazil alone, 40 million are exposed to more than one factor of this type. Because they do more activities in external environments and their bodies are still being formed, children are more vulnerable to these scenarios — which also affect their rights, emotional health and school performance.

This Tuesday, Café da Manhã discusses the effects of climate change on children. JP Amaral, manager of the Nature area at Instituto Alana, which works to protect children’s rights, analyzes how their demands are being taken into account.
