Podcast debates betting regulation in Brazil – Folha – 01/22/2024 – Podcasts

Ads for online sports betting sites and apps, known as bets, are everywhere. This proliferation is one of the hallmarks of this market in Brazil. A Datafolha survey in December showed that 15% of Brazilians have already made or are making bets of this type — the number is higher among those aged 16 to 24: 30%.

Those who play spend, on average, R$260 per month, and the poorest have a share of the income consumed by the activity. The expansion of the market raises the alarm of educators, who draw attention to the popularity of betting among young people (despite the ban on them for minors), and doctors, due to the potential for addiction.

Online sports betting has grown up in a limbo of rules and oversight. At the end of 2023, President Lula (PT) sanctioned a law on the subject, which, among other things, defines tax rates; the government targets the revenue potential of the activity. The regulation should be finalized this semester, and the expectation is that it can also curb factors such as manipulation of results.
