The celebrations marking 80 years of history of the Amapá Military Police (PM) reach a high point this Saturday (24) with tributes and a race open to the public to encourage sports. The athletes’ gathering takes place from 5 am, at the headquarters of the PM General Command, in the South Zone of Macapá. In the afternoon, from 5pm, at Fortaleza de São José, the ceremony celebrating the date will take place, with tributes to the pioneers of the Territorial Guard.

The race coordinator, Major Valdir Furtado, explains that the expectation is that around 3 thousand people will participate in the sporting event. The start takes place at 6 am and follows a 5 kilometer route, with departure and arrival at the police headquarters.

“The PM race is already a tradition and we will have approximately 700 to 800 military police officers, in addition to the external public, which is estimated at more than 2 thousand participants. So, there will be a large gathering of people to celebrate the PM’s 80th birthday”detailed Furtado.

80th anniversary ceremony

During the ceremony in Fortaleza, commendations will be given to the territorial guards of Amapá, pioneers of public security in the state. Also in recognition of the work carried out by the military police officers, there will be an Intellectual Merit medal and a Standard Police Officer certificate. The festive planning continues with the awarding of the Efficiency Cup to the winning team of the PM’s internal games.

History of the Amapá Military Police

The institution was created on February 17, 1944 by the then governor of the Federal Territory of Amapá, Janary Gentil Nunes, and elevated to the status of Military Police on November 26, 1975, with Law No. 6,270, sanctioned by the then president of the Republic, Ernesto Geisel, with the purpose of maintaining public order, based on the precepts of discipline and hierarchy.

The Military Police of Amapá had as its first general commander the Brazilian Army officer José Índio Machado. The service provided by the corporation was carried out through the Capital and Interior Policing Command, which had four companies in Macapá and one company in the Interior , in addition to a fire fighting group.

Currently, the Military Police is under the command of Colonel Adilton Corrêa and has a staff of 2,840 military police officers, distributed in 14 battalions operating in the capital and in the interior. The institution has the duty to carry out overt policing in uniform, to preserve public order, through preventive, overt and immediate repressive activities against crime.

New fighters

The Government of Amapá promoted, in January 2024, the inaugural class of the largest class ever convened for the Military Police Combatant Soldier Training Course. There are more than 530 students who, if approved, will pursue a military career, strengthening the security offered to the population.

Indoor Games

In addition to the race, the police officers participated in four days of intense competitions. There were eight teams that competed in police shooting, tug of war, swimming, running and futsal.

“The winning team was the Delta team, formed by the Special Operations Battalion [Bope] and three other directorates”informed Major Valdir.
