Sao Paulo-SP) – The Federal Police (PF) concluded that the Saudi jewels confiscated by the Federal Revenue Service at Guarulhos Airport (SP) in 2021 are worth between R$ 4 million and R$ 5 million. The information is from sources with access to the investigations.

Federal criminal experts from the National Institute of Criminalistics of the PF (INC) finished the analysis two weeks ago after a month and a half of expertise.

The report produced by the experts points out the real value of the jewels and was included in the investigation, which is being conducted under secrecy by the PF in São Paulo.

During the analysis, an expert traveled to Switzerland to visit the headquarters of Chopard, a brand of luxury items. In the European country, the experts spoke directly with those responsible for making the jewels.

The work also included the individual analysis of diamond stones. The necklace alone contains approximately 2,000 pieces.

The package was delivered by the Federal Revenue Service to the PF at the end of March this year and was transported to Brasília, where the INC headquarters are located, for expertise.

The jewels were given to the Brazilian delegation in October 2021, when a team from the former Minister of Mines and Energy visited Saudi Arabia. The case was revealed by the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo.

understand the case

In a statement to the Federal Police, former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said that he would have become aware of the gifts one year after they were received by the Ministry of Mines and Energy and withheld by the Federal Revenue Service. Bolsonaro, however, said he does not remember who informed him.

In addition, the former president said that he called his aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, to have more information about the case – and that would have been his “only order” on the subject. Bolsonaro denies any wrongdoing.

The PF is investigating the participation of officials from the Presidency and the Federal Revenue Service in an attempt to clear the jewels from customs.
