Former president Jair Bolsonaro stated, this Saturday (9), that “one day history will explain what happened at the end of 2022”. “But we must often consider the page turned. It’s the same thing at home, when you have a problem, if you want to bring up that problem every day, you won’t live happily. So we turn the page to 2022 and we have elections ahead of us,” he said, during a PL Mulher event, in Salvador.

Bolsonaro is being investigated for an alleged coup attempt at the end of 2022, after losing the election to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. After the defeat, he retired and left the country, heading for the United States, on December 30th, thus failing to hand over the presidential sash to his successor. He denies having done anything to prevent the inauguration and that the government collaborated with the transition to the new PT administration. At the end of February, when called to testify about the case at the Federal Police, he chose to remain silent.

In his speech in Salvador, alongside his wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, the former president stated that it is necessary to make comparisons between his government and Lula’s administration.

“We seek to serve all Brazilians regardless of their personal issues. We brought water to the Northeast, created PIX, revived the railway system, created an excellent foreign policy, valued our agribusiness, which is really important for our economy. We treat the most humble with dignity, tripling the value of Bolsa Família. We expanded our trade with the whole world. We gave you the legitimate right to defense. We increasingly show that defending the family is a matter of pride for all of us. We went into schools rejecting gender ideology. We value private property. The MST did not act in my government,” he said.

He also highlighted support for the State of Israel, which is now criticized by Lula for reacting to the attack by the terrorist group Hamas in October last year. In the end, he praised Michelle.

“Not to mention that we had the best first lady in Brazil. A woman who, in anonymity, dedicated herself to people with disabilities,” said Bolsonaro. Michelle heads PL Mulher, has traveled the country to engage women in politics and is being considered by the party to run for a parliamentary seat in 2026, when Bolsonaro will be ineligible, by decision of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
