General Secretary of Força Sindical, João Carlos Gonçalves criticizes the Lula (PT) government’s guidance so that ministries do not criticize or act in memory of the 60th anniversary of the 1964 coup, on March 31st of this year.
“In Brazil, it is a tradition for democratic governments to seek justice and reparation in relation to the abuses of the military dictatorship. [Isso vem] Since the Special Commission on Political Deaths and Disappearances of the Fernando Henrique Cardoso government, continued by the PT governments”, says the union leader, known as Juruna. “Preaching oblivion is disrespectful towards those who fought for democracy and does not produce political and social progress .”
As the Panel showed, the government’s decision to instruct ministries not to carry out acts in remembrance of the 1964 coup seeks to relax relations with the Armed Forces and in the face of persistent polarization in the country.
The guidance was passed by the Presidency of the Republic to ministries and comes days after President Lula (PT) stated that he prefers not to dwell on the consequences of the 1964 coup because this “is part of the past” and wants to “move the country forward”.
