Number of prisoners registered with Enem breaks record – 01/20/2024 – Panel

The total number of people deprived of liberty registered in the Enem (National High School Exam) reached 84,169 last year, a record since 2015, according to data from Inep (National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira).

The number represents an increase of 17.5% compared to the total number of registrants in 2022, which was 71,614.

Enem PPL is aimed at adults deprived of liberty and young people under socio-educational measures that include deprivation of liberty. The tests are administered in penitentiaries, public jails, provisional detention centers and socio-educational institutions.

By state, São Paulo, which has the largest prison population in the country, recorded the highest number of enrollees, with 22,119. Next come Minas Gerais (6,683), Ceará (5,437) and Santa Catarina (5,243).

In addition to Enem, a total of 153,965 registered for Encceja (National Examination for Certification of Competences of Young People and Adults) for people deprived of liberty or under socio-educational measures that include deprivation of liberty. Of these, 91,875 sought the primary education certificate and 62,090, secondary education.
