Nottingham Forest loses points for violating financial rules and goes to relegation zone in English – 03/18/2024 – Sport

Nottingham Forest, from the first division of English football, was punished with a four-point reduction in the Premier League standings for violating the championship’s financial rules, the league said this Monday (18) in a statement.

The club admitted to having disregarded profitability and viability rules, exceeding by 34.5 million pounds ($43.5 million) the limit of authorized financial losses, which in its case was set at 61 million pounds ($77 .6 million), explained the Premier League.

Clubs are generally allowed a maximum loss of £105 million ($132 million) over a three-year assessment period, but this amount is reduced by £22 million ($28 million) for each last season in the second division. In the case of Forest, there were two seasons in the second division during the period in question.

The 1978 English champion and two-time European champion (1979, 1980) returned to his country’s top flight in the 2022-2023 season and has managed to remain in the elite ever since.

They are the second Premier League club to be sanctioned for financial reasons this season, after Everton.

Everton were handed a ten-point penalty in November, but the penalty was reduced to six in February following consideration of their appeal. Everton are now at risk of a second sanction for another similar case.

Nottingham Forest, which on Sunday had 25 points and was in seventeenth place, is now in eighteenth with 21 points, falling into the relegation zone. They are one point behind Luton (17th), the first outside the relegation zone.

There is still the possibility that Forest will appeal against their sanction.
