Argentine goalkeeper world champion in 1978 has gold medal stolen – 03/18/2024 – Sport

Former goalkeeper Ubaldo Fillol, a prominent figure in Argentina’s consecration as world champion in the 1978 World Cup, suffered a robbery in his apartment in which the gold medal he obtained with that first important Albiceleste title was taken away from him.

Considered one of the best Argentine goalkeepers in history and decisive in winning the World Cup 46 years ago, Fillol had his car keys stolen while having dinner at a club in the Floresta neighborhood, in Buenos Aires. Upon leaving the scene, he discovered that his documents and house keys were also missing.

Everything in his apartment was torn apart and the gold medal obtained for Argentina’s world title in 1978, the most precious jewel of his successful football career, was missing.

Police confirmed that the apartment door had not been breached and began a burglary investigation in the absence of residents.

“I feel tremendous pain, I feel exposed in the face of the growing insecurity we face. They also took replicas of the shirt from the final against the Netherlands, but what hurts me most are the medals,” he told the channel Todo Noticias.

Regarding the ongoing police investigation, the former goalkeeper indicated that it was possible to identify the thief and explained that “it is possible to see a person in the video. They managed to obtain my address from inside the car.”

The ‘Pato’, as Fillol, aged 73, is popularly known, came up at the Quilmes club, but stood out mainly at the capital’s River Plate. He also played for Racing, Argentinos Juniors, Flamengo (Brazil), Atlético de Madrid (Spain) and Vélez Sarsfield, a club from which he retired in 1990 at the age of 40.

He spent 21 seasons in the first division of football and saved a record 26 penalties.
