Newcastle United’s Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali has been banned from football for 10 months due to violations of betting rules on matches in Italy, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) said on Thursday (26).

The Italy midfielder, who joined Newcastle from Milan this year, is also expected to attend treatment sessions for problem players and give a series of talks about his experience over a further eight-month period as part of a according to FIGC.

The plea bargain agreement, which has international validity, was announced by the president of the FIGC, Gabriele Gravina. It will rule Tonali out of the remainder of the English club’s season and next year’s Euro 2024 should Italy qualify.

Tonali, 23, is the most high-profile player involved in a betting scandal that is rocking Italian football. His agent said he suffers from gambling addiction.

The midfielder joined Newcastle from Milan in July for €70 million, a record fee for an Italian player.

Newcastle had no immediate comment. Tonali acted as a substitute during the English team’s 1-0 Champions League home defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night (25).

Legal and sports authorities have been investigating the use of illegal betting platforms by football players in Italy.
