Moro and Novo demonstrate against Zanin’s approval for a vacancy in the STF

Senator Sergio Moro (União Brasil-PR) criticized, on the night of this Wednesday (21), the approval of lawyer Cristiano Zanin for a vacancy as Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). Zanin, who acted as a lawyer for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in the Lava Jato processes, had his nomination approved by 58 votes in favor of senators against 18 against.

“I voted against the approval of the name of Cristiano Zanin for the STF because I understand, fundamentally, that the appointment by the President of his private lawyer opens a bad precedent for the independence of the Supreme Court. coherence and my commitment with the voters of Paraná”, wrote the senator in the twitter.

Moro, who is a former Lava Jato judge, had already shown dissatisfaction with Zanin’s appointment on other occasions. During the vote in the plenary of the Senate, he stated that the appointment of Zanin, for having been Lula’s lawyer, is a “risk to the independence” of the Court.

The Novo party also criticized Zanin’s approval. The caption argued that it “voted against because it understood that the nomination violates the principle of impersonality”. “We will continue to oppose the PT’s nefarious project of power”, stated the acronym in the twitter.

After the definition in the Senate, federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) posted on social networks excerpts from a video in which Lula stated that “[…] it was not prudent, nor democratic, for a President of the Republic to want to have the ministers of the Supreme Court as friends”.

Before the vote, deputy Deltan Dallagonol, impeached by decision of the TSE, stated: “the Brazilian people do not want Lula’s personal lawyer (and friend) to be appointed Minister of the STF”. After the confirmation of the new minister, Dallagnol shared a post by lawyer and political commentator Fabiana Barroso criticizing the senators who approved Zanin’s name for the Supreme Court.
