STF ministers and politicians extol Zanin’s approval – 06/21/2023 – Politics

Ministers of the STF (Federal Supreme Court) and the political world reacted to the approval by the plenary of the Senate of the appointment of lawyer Cristiano Zanin as the new Minister of the Court.

His future Supreme colleagues extolled his qualities, welcomed him and predicted a good performance by President Lula’s nominee (PT).

Ministers from the Lula government also celebrated the approval. Even opponents, in particular Bolsonarists, avoided criticism of the result of the vote and the consequent confirmation of Zanin.

The Senate approved this Wednesday (21), by 58 votes to 18, the nomination of Zanin to the Supreme Court.

First nominated by Lula (PT) in the current term for the body, Zanin is a friend of the president, for whom he advocated in the actions of Operation Lava Jato, and needed the vote of at least 41 senators (out of a total of 81 members of the House) to be chancelled.

He will take the place of Ricardo Lewandowski, who retired in April, and will be able to stay on the STF until November 2050, when he turns 75, the age limit for court ministers.

STF Minister Alexandre de Moraes stated that the approval was deserved and said he was certain that Brazil would win with its “competent and courageous performance in our Supreme Court”.

In the same line, Dias Toffoli stated that Zanin will honor the Court and also Brazil.

“It is with satisfaction that I received the approval by the Senate of the Republic, by a large margin of votes, of the name of President Lula’s nominee for the Federal Supreme Court, Dr. Cristiano Zanin, who will certainly add to the STF with all his brilliance, intelligence, capacity and his skill. He will certainly be a great minister of the STF, honoring the Court and honoring Brazil”, he informed in a note.

Luís Roberto Barroso also released a note congratulating the lawyer and added that he always “with high professional quality and I see him as a serious, competent and ethical lawyer even in the face of adversity. I welcome him”.

Minister Edson Fachin said that Zanin’s nomination was a “deference gesture” by President Lula towards the STF, but, unlike his peers, he did not praise the lawyer’s qualities.

“The nomination of Dr. Cristiano Zanin is a gesture of deference by the President of the Republic to this Court, as well as his rapid approval by the Federal Senate. The Federal Supreme Court once again has its full composition with a new member to to continue honoring the democratic mission envisaged by the citizen’s Constitution.

First nominee of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Kassio Nunes Marques also released a brief note wishing “much success in the performance of the magistracy in the STF”.

Another Bolsonaro nominee, André Mendonça said that Zanin is a “prepared jurist” and that he has a lot to contribute to justice in Brazil.

Ministers of the Lula government also manifested themselves on their social networks, celebrating the result of the Senate vote and praising their legal knowledge and preparation to hold office.

“Minister Zanin will bring to the STF the important experience of advocacy, legal knowledge, courage to face controversies and consideration. I congratulate the new minister, wishing him success and God’s protection. I congratulate President Lula and the Federal Senate”, wrote the minister of Justice, Flávio Dino (PSB).

Rui Costa (PT), from the Civil House, stated that Zanin has a “brilliant trajectory” and “proven competence”.

Even Bolsonarist parliamentarians avoided criticizing the approval by the Senate of the nomination of Cristiano Zanin. In recent days, opposition deputies and senators had already praised the lawyer.

Bolsonarist deputy Bia Kicis (PL-DF) just posted on her social networks “And long live democracy”. Following, in an image attached to the post, she only adds that the nomination was “more accepted in the Senate than the nomination of former President Jair Bolsonaro for the nomination of André Mendonça”.
