Moraes prohibits Bolsonaro from going to Armed Forces events – 03/08/2024 – Power

Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court, banned former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and others involved in the alleged coup attempt investigated by the Federal Police from participating in events in the Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defense.

The STF minister’s decision is from Thursday (7) and targets Bolsonaro and military personnel such as former ministers Augusto Heleno (Institutional Security Office), Braga Netto (Civil House) and Paulo Sergio Nogueira (Defense).

Also among those summoned about the ban are the president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, and the former Minister of Justice, Anderson Torres.

According to Moraes, they are prohibited from participating in “ceremonies, parties or tributes held at the Ministry of Defense, the Navy, the Air Force, the Army and the Military Police.”

The minister stipulated a daily fine of R$20,000 in case of non-compliance with the imposed measure.

In addition to informing the targets of the decision, Moraes also informed the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces commands of the ban.

The decision was made within the investigation into the negotiations for a coup d’état carried out within the investigation into digital militias.

The aim of the coup would be to reverse the election result, according to investigators. The investigation investigates the production of minutes by people close to Bolsonaro in which they explained how the intervention would take place.

With Mauro Cid’s testimony and the evidence obtained in other operations, the PF came to the conclusion that Bolsonaro had access to versions of these minutes and even asked for changes to the text and presented the proposal to military leaders, to probe possible support from the Forces. The first version of the text would have been presented to Bolsonaro by his international affairs advisor, Filipe Martins, and priest José Eduardo de Oliveira e Silva at a meeting at Palácio da Alvorada on November 19, 2022.

According to the PF, jurist Amauri Feres Saad would also have participated in discussions about the coup draft that was presented to Bolsonaro, participating in subsequent meetings.

The text highlighted a series of alleged interferences by the Judiciary in the Executive Branch — the so-called “considerands”, which, in the view of those investigated, would provide a legal basis for the coup d’état.

“After the adjustments, Jair Bolsonaro would have summoned the commanders of the Military Forces at the Palácio da Alvorada to present the document and put pressure on the Armed Forces”, says an excerpt from the report.

In the decision that authorized the PF operation on February 8, Moraes said that the messages and evidence “signal that then-president Jair Messias Bolsonaro was drafting and adjusting the decree and was already seeking the support of General Estevam Theophilo Gaspar de Oliveira ( there are records that the latter was at Palácio do Planalto on 12/9/2022), all of which demonstrate that enforcement actions for a coup d’état were underway”.

In the PF’s view, the discussion of coup plans by Bolsonaro and his allies was not an isolated event. It arises, according to the police, from a previous strategy by the former president to cast doubt on the fairness of the electoral process, casting doubt on the functioning of electronic voting machines.
