Moraes holds information about 8/1 and breaks promise – 05/28/2023 – Power

Almost two months after Alexandre de Moraes’ promise, the CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) of the Legislative Chamber has still not received any information from the minister of the STF (Federal Supreme Court) about the January 8 attacks.

At the end of March, the magistrate joked that secrets are only kept confidential when the two people involved have something to lose, but he promised to share some information with the commission. Despite this, the local CPI claims that Moraes has not sent a single line since then.

The minister’s lack of answers draws the attention of district deputies mainly to the possible participation in acts of vandalism by Federal District Military Police colonel Jorge Naime, arrested since February in the fifth phase of Operation Lesa Pátria.

On the last 19th, Moraes denied the defense’s request for his release — despite arguments that the military police officers allegedly involved have already been heard and that the colonel poses no risk to the investigations.

The minister stated that the officer’s conduct “under analysis is very serious”, and that it is still necessary to understand “the real reason for his absence at such a sensitive moment”. The PGR (Attorney General’s Office) also supported preventive detention.

“It would be very important to share the Supreme Court documents with us. Mainly in terms of what keeps Colonel Naime, from the DOP, in custody. [Departamento Operacional]”, says district deputy Hermeto (MDB), CPI rapporteur and reserve MP.

“Even former minister Anderson [Torres] he ordered it released. Why this delay in relaxing Colonel Naime’s arrest? It’s something we don’t know. Everything leads to believe that only he has this information, due to the time he has been in prison.”

Naime was head of the PM’s Operational Department on January 8, but had taken a leave of absence. In testimony to the CPI, in March, the colonel stated that he would amend the so-called reward waiver with vacations, which had been postponed from December to January because of the presidential inauguration.

The president of the CPI of the Legislative Chamber, deputy Chico Vigilante (PT), says he will reinforce the request for Moraes to send at least part of the documentation. “So far the documents have not been sent”, he says.

“They [os documentos] will be of great importance for the elucidation of the facts that we are investigating and for the elaboration of the final report of the CPI that investigates the anti-democratic acts”, says Vigilante.

Privately, the members of the committee believe that the STF minister may have changed his mind about sending information because of his discomfort with district deputy Paula Belmonte (Citizenship).

According to reports, the March meeting ended after Belmonte came out in defense of the camp set up after the defeat of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in front of the Army Headquarters, in Brasília.

Moraes, according to people who were present, reacted emphatically. The minister stated that it is a crime to ask for the end of the democratic rule of law and said that whoever does this again will also be arrested.

Despite the stress with Belmonte, other districts consider that the magistrate never or should have taken seriously the idea of sharing something with the CPI and sharing its power.

Created in February, the CPI of the Legislative Chamber of the Federal District tries to advance with the investigations before the mixed CPI of the National Congress, installed last week.

The local commission heard General Gustavo Henrique Dutra, head of the Planalto Military Command on January 8, and invited former GSI (Institutional Security Office) minister Augusto Heleno, one of Bolsonaro’s closest assistants.

The commission also approved the summoning of Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, aide to the former president, who was arrested in early May on suspicion of fraud in his vaccination card.

The aim is to hear Cid not only about the attacks on the three Powers on January 8, but also about the episode on December 12, when vandals tried to invade the headquarters of the PF (Federal Police), in Brasília, and set fire to buses and cars.

Alexandre de Moraes was approached by the press office of the Supreme Court for the report, but there was no response.

Moraes is rapporteur for inquiries that investigate the attack on the headquarters of the three Powers on different fronts: financiers, intellectual authors and instigators, executors, and omission agents. Among those investigated are Bolsonaro, Torres and the governor of the DF, Ibaneis Rocha (MDB).
