The mayor of the Capital, Sebastião Melo (MDB), met, yesterday morning, with councilors from the base of the government and also with independent parliamentarians. In all, 22 councilors were present to address issues that will be a priority to be voted on in 2023, such as the end of the premium license for civil servants and the partial privatization of the Municipal Department of Water and Sewage (Dmae).

Leader of the government in the house, councilor Idenir Cecchim (MDB) praised the mayor’s attitude and defined the meeting as an “alignment” between the Executive and Legislative branches. “Mayor Melo wanted to hear the councillors, what they thought and what they intend to do in these years. Melo listened to their claims and demands.”

Councilor Mari Pimentel, leader of the Novo group – a party that positions itself as independent in the Chamber – said that it was important to have this meeting with the mayor, but criticized the lack of concrete projects presented by Melo at the meeting. “He signaled an ideological debate (…) he said that we should criticize the government (Luiz Inácio) Lula (da Silva, PT) and did not talk so much about the deliveries he will make. We hope that in the next meetings he will pass on to us vision of the city that he wants to deliver in 2024”, pondered the councilwoman.

At the meeting, Melo also defended some projects that should go to the plenary vote in 2023. One of them is the end of the premium license for city employees and the other deals with the partial privatization of Dmae.

Despite the fact that the government base is broad in the Chamber, the vote of councilors linked to independent parties is still important for projects considered “controversial” to be approved. Councilwoman Mari Pimentel guarantees that her party will vote according to her principles. “We are independent, we vote according to our convictions. All votes that are converging with our liberal ideal, we will vote in favor”, she completes.

On his social networks, Mayor Sebastião Melo thanked the presence of councilors. “We have many advances to build together with the Chamber”, he pointed out.
