Joana Darc proposes canceling the professional registration of veterinarians for mistreatment of animals

Brasilia DF) – State deputy Joana Darc (União Brasil) presented, during a visit to the office of federal deputy Saullo Vianna (União Brasil), in Brasília, the Bill (PL) to immediately revoke the professional registration of veterinarians for abuse treatments for animals. If sanctioned, the law will be valid for the entire country.

Together with the federal deputy, the parliamentarian debated on various guidelines necessary for the animal cause and, soon, will present to Amazonian society a package of laws in favor of animals.

“I filed a bill that determines that when a veterinarian commits a crime of mistreatment of animals, proven, transited and judged, he will immediately have his professional registration revoked”, highlighted the parliamentarian, who is president of the Protection Commission to Animals, Environment and Sustainable Development of the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (CPAMA-Aleam).

Visit to the Federal Council of Veterinary Medicine

After being assisted in the Chamber of Deputies, Joana Darc went to the Federal Council of Veterinary Medicine (CFMV) to participate in a meeting with the directors, with the aim of filing a request for amendment to the Code of Ethics for Veterinarians, so that the punishment for the veterinarian who mistreats animals is the withdrawal of the professional registration, immediately.

“The CFMV provided all the clarifications regarding the request, filed with the Agency, which requests a change in the Code of Ethics for Veterinarians. We request access to the records, the decision of the process, the case of André Luiz Sotero, to verify this entire administrative process. Therefore, we are going to analyze the administrative and legal aspects, as there is a possibility that he will respond to a new ethics process and that he may be annulled in accordance with the Law ”, he said.

Joana also pondered the need for the Regional Council of Veterinary Medicine of Amazonas (CRMV-AM) to listen to the population, NGOs and local animal protectors, so as not to give chances to Luiz Sotero, the veterinarian of pitbull fights, to practice the profession again, after the crime he committed.

“You don’t have to give a chance to a veterinarian who, upon completing the faculty of veterinary medicine, swore to defend the lives of animals, but, during the exercise of his profession, he wants to mistreat animals. We are going to demonstrate in front of the CRMV-AM so that there is justice and the impeachment of Luiz Sotero. I am raising my voice in defense of the animals of the Amazon and Brazil. When there is an animal at stake, I am and always will be on the side of the animals ”he said.

About the Manifestation

The CRMV-AM’s decision to only suspend veterinarian André Sotero for 80 days, for active participation in a dogfight, in December 2019, in the city of São Paulo, will be the target of a popular demonstration headed by congresswoman Joana Darc. The act is scheduled for next Monday (27th), at 4 pm, in front of the organ’s headquarters, located at Rua Manoel Leão, Quadra 3 Casa 1, Parque 10.

The revolt of Joana and the other animal protectors is that André Sotero did not even receive the maximum sentence of suspension and, after the end of the ethical process of the entity and without the cancellation of the registration, he will be able to act, in full, in the profession of doctor veterinarian. It is worth remembering that, at the time, among those arrested, together with André, were gamblers, breeders and animal trainers, who sold roasted meat from dogs killed in the fighting, meat that was used for sale and consumption on site.
