The Teahupoo stage was full of emotions. Many opportunities to qualify for the finals for both men and women, in addition to places for the Olympic Games next year made this stage one of the most exciting this year.

In the men’s group Filipe Toledo, Griffin Colapinto and Ethan Ewing were guaranteed places among the five finalists who will compete for the world title in September in California.

Yago Dora, who started the stage in fifth place, lost and started to depend on other results and ended up being left out. João Chianca also lost and his place was threatened, but in the final composition of the results he secured fourth place overall and qualified for the grand final.

With the stage advancing, the last spot was between Gabriel Medina and Jack Robinson, whoever won the stage would take the last spot. Gabriel as always surfed a lot during the whole stage, with his experience in the tubes of Teahupoo he was advanced heat after heat without many scares. In the final he led the heat for a large part until the Australian got a nice tube and ended up going back to the heat. With a sum of 15.66 against 15.00 by Gabriel Medina, he ended up winning the stage and occupied fifth place in the overall ranking.

As a result, Medina was out of contention for the world title in September and failed to qualify for the Olympics.

The Brazilians Filipe Toledo and João Chianca are among the finalists and have secured their spots for the Olympics.

In the women’s category Carrissa Moore, Tyler Wright, Caroline Mars, Molly Picklum and Caitlin Simmers are classified and will compete for the world title.

Brazilian Tatiana Weston-Webb, despite not being able to qualify among the five finalists to compete for the world title, has a guaranteed place in the next Olympics, as she won the ISA Games in April and will participate in the Olympic Games for the second time.

The next stage will decide the 2023 world champions and will be held in Trestles, California between the 8th and 16th of September. Filipe Toledo is the big favorite, since the Brazilian lives in Trestles and is used to the local waves. He still has the advantage of having finished in first place and will only be waiting for the winner among the other four competitors to know who will face him in the grand final.

No doubt it will be a great final and despite many comments about the form of dispute adopted by the WSL, the championship is exciting and very disputed.

Let’s follow and cheer for the Brazilians, it will certainly be a surfing show in the last stage of the year.

aloha
