A member of the national coordination of the MBL (Movimento Brasil Livre), Renato Battista sent a complaint to the International Criminal Court (ICC) against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade, because of the dengue epidemic.

“It seems that both the president and the Minister of Health were quite aware that their inaction would lead to many deaths. They let it happen. For some reason, they preferred not to take action and, when deaths inevitably occurred, they remained silent”, says Battista.

He adds that the omissions may have caused the crime of genocide and calls for an investigation into their conduct.

This Thursday (21), the country reached the mark of 2 million cases of the disease, with 682 confirmed deaths. The opposition to President Lula has sought to compare the outbreak with deaths in the Covid-19 pandemic, in which Jair Bolsonaro had a denialist stance.

“I want to know from the ICC whether a government that delays the purchase of vaccines and, due to its incompetence and denialism, generates the biggest dengue epidemic of the century is a genocidal government, as Lula himself said was the case with the previous government. The ruler will it be the same for his own government?”, says Battista.

Complaints to the ICC are preliminarily analyzed by the court, which subsequently decides whether to open an investigation.
