Mauro Cid testifies at the 8/1 CPMI this Tuesday (4)

Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, former assistant to former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), will be heard this Tuesday (4) by the Mixed Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) dedicated to investigating acts of vandalism against the headquarters of the Three Powers on January 8. The deposition should start at 9 am.

Cid has been in prison since May 3, accused of frauding vaccination cards. Although his arrest has nothing to do with the acts of January 8, the summons was requested by 12 government parliamentarians, such as Senators Randolfe Rodrigues (no party-AP) and Eliziane Gama (PSD-MA), on the grounds that the Police Federal found alleged messages with “coup plotter” on his cell phone.

The defense of Bolsonaro’s former assistant asked to be dismissed from the hearing, but Minister Cármen Lúcia, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), determined that he must give testimony to the CPMI. She, however, guaranteed that he has the right to remain silent so as not to answer questions that could incriminate him.

According to the PF, Cid was the interlocutor of messages sent by Jean Lawand Júnior, who testified at the CPMI last Tuesday (27). At the time, Lewand repeatedly denied having asked Mauro Cid to convince Bolsonaro to lead a coup d’état through military intervention or a state of siege. Senator Eliziane Gama, CPMI rapporteur, said that she wants to confront both versions.

“Colonel Lawand tried to say that he was giving guidance only in relation to national balance, national peace. We are going to try to hear from Mauro Cid if he actually received this type of communication along these same lines”, he said.
