Cid Gomes mentions betrayal when talking about splits with Ciro – 7/2/2023 – Politics

Since the 2022 election, the relationship between the Ferreira Gomes brothers, Ciro and Cid (both from the PDT), has been strained. The former presidential candidate suffered fourth place in the race for the Planalto Palace, his worst result in the four times he ran for office, without having the senator on his podium. The parliamentarian, in turn, was more active in the second round campaign of the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). Months after the election, the two brothers are again on opposite sides.

Cid is fighting for the presidency of the PDT in Ceará, the electoral birthplace of the Ferreira Gomes family. Ciro, in turn, defends the maintenance of federal deputy André Figueiredo in office. The backdrop for the disagreement, which further deepens the rift between the brothers, is last year’s election.

The former presidential candidate accuses Cid of having been abandoned by him, who prioritized an alliance with the PT and with the former governor of Ceará and current Minister of Education, Camilo Santana (PT). The senator did not get involved in his brother’s candidacy in the same way he did in past elections, when he was his campaign coordinator.

A SheetCid countered Ciro’s lamentations.

“It wasn’t betrayal. Betrayal is something you do and don’t warn. I warned you that I wouldn’t speak out about the state election. Now Ciro is there talking about stabbing”, says the senator, referring to his brother’s speech about having been attacked behind his back because of the lawsuit.

The analogy was said by the former presidential candidate on the eve of the first round vote, and recently repeated in a press conference at the PDT regional meeting, in Fortaleza.

“I don’t want to comment because the stab wound to my back is still hurting a lot”, replied Ciro, on the last day 22, when asked about the relationship with Cid.

The rift between the two brothers began with the PDT nomination of the party’s candidate for the government of Ceará. Ciro was in favor of choosing the former mayor of Fortaleza, Roberto Cláudio, while Cid preferred that the candidate be the then head of the Palácio da Abolição, Izolda Cela —a name defended by the PT. The decision put an end to the alliance of more than two decades between the two parties in the state.

“Since I didn’t agree to break the alliance, I retreated so as not to fight with Ciro and I protected myself. I warned him that I would not demonstrate in the state election”, says Cid, justifying why he preferred not to be an active voice during the last election. “Everything I predicted happened. We had a big defeat.”

Roberto Cláudio was third in the election, with 14.14% of the votes. The PT candidate, Elmano Freitas, was elected in the first round, with 54.02%.

The distance between the brothers was clear in Ciro’s two final campaign agendas, on the eve of the first round. On the occasion, the then candidate appeared without Cid in motorcades held in Fortaleza and Sobral, a city in Ceará that the two managed.

The current mayor of the municipality, Ivo Gomes, the duo’s third brother, also did not attend both events, thus reinforcing the former presidential candidate’s image of isolation.

Cid justifies the decision: “We weren’t [aos eventos] because he was with Roberto Cláudio. Ivo and I proposed that Ciro make a schedule without Roberto Cláudio, but he didn’t want to”.

The senator says that the removal of his brother, the party’s decision for Roberto Cláudio and the break with the PT in Ceará made him go through a difficult phase last year.

“I thought the party’s posture was wrong and I took precautions. They were the worst months of my life”, says Cid, who adds that he hoped that the situation would improve after the election.

Dispute for the presidency of the PDT in Ceará creates a new rift

The new rift between the brothers goes through the municipal election next year and also involves the PT.

Cid is part of the PDT wing that advocates resuming alliances with the PT in the state so that they support a pedetista candidate for mayoralty of Fortaleza, currently occupied by José Sarto (PDT). In exchange, the acronym would officially become part of the base of Elmano’s government.

On the other hand, supporters closer to Ciro, André Figueiredo and Roberto Cláudio prefer that the party maintains independence from the PT. According to allies, one of the reasons for this is that the same fight as the last election does not occur, that is, a split in the PDT because PT members prefer a different name than the one the party wants.

Behind the scenes, Figueiredo’s wing, which also accumulates the position of interim president of the national PDT, claims that Cid’s attempt to control the Ceará directory does not match the senator’s position of not having supported the party’s own candidate in the election. last.

The offensive has been seen as a way to transform the PDT into a “PT pull”. Cid, in turn, vehemently denies the accusation and says he has the support of the majority of the state board to resume the alliance.

“We have the support of the majority of deputies and mayors. André started to take a position of opposition against the will of the majority”, says Cid, who adds: “I’m not pleading [a presidência do partido no estado] on a whim or desire”.

To resolve the impasse, Cid’s wing called a meeting of the Ceará PDT for the 7th of July. The act, however, was questioned by opponents, who claimed that the meeting would not have legitimacy. The senator, in turn, stated that the summons had the signature of more than two thirds of the directory, respecting the party’s statute.

In the middle of the fight, pedestrians even said that Cid would leave the party. Suspicions increased after conversations that the senator had with the national president of Podemos, federal deputy Renata Abreu (SP).

A Sheet, the parliamentarian confirmed that he was asked by the president of Podemos, but did not accept the invitation. He also denies that he wants to leave the PDT.

“I never said that I would leave the PDT. What I did was to give an argument that I would not leave. I don’t want to leave so much that I am willing to be president [do partido no Ceará]”.

The imbroglio made the Minister of Social Security and licensed president of the PDT, Carlos Lupi, spend two days in Fortaleza, on Monday and Tuesday (26th and 27th) to calm tempers among his supporters.

The expectation is that by the beginning of next week, when Lupi will talk to Elmano and Camilo Santana, a definition will come out of who will command the Ceará directory
