The greatest player in the history of Brazilian football, Marta, 37, stated that she wants to be a mother.

“I have the dream and desire to have children. Grab a chair and sit on the side of the field watching them play, train and take them to training. I hope this can become reality”, he declared, in an interview with FIFA website.

The Alagoas native from the small town of Dois Riachos has been dating defender Carrie Lawrence, her teammate at Orlando Pride, in the United States, for around two years.

“I don’t know how long I will continue playing. I don’t want to say if it will be one or two years, but I would love to end my career as a mother,” said the Brazilian.

The star also said that she would like the “family line” to continue through an heir who will also play as a football player.

“A lot of people think that because I’m a football player and I’m always playing and busy, and because in the past it was a predominantly male sport, I didn’t dream of or want to become a mother.”

This week, during The Best award ceremony for the best player of the season (won six times by the Brazilian, record holder among women), Marta received a series of honors from FIFA (International Football Federation). She received a trophy for the achievements achieved throughout her career and will name the award that will be given to the scorer of the most beautiful goal of the season. Until the most recent edition of the award, women competed in the same category as men.

“You don’t plan on receiving an award like this. It’s not for your performance throughout the year as an athlete, but for what you do for society in general. And, for me, that’s priceless,” said the player, who also acts, since 2010, as ambassador for the UN (United Nations).

At the FIFA event, Marta also showed her willingness to compete in the Paris Olympic Games, which will be held between July 24th and August 11th. “We’re in the year of the Olympics. Who knows, maybe we’ll play another one?”

For the Brazilian team, Marta won two silver medals at the Olympics, in 2004, in Athens, and in 2008, in Beijing. She is also a three-time Copa América champion (2003, 2010 and 2018) and two-time Pan American Games champion (2003 and 2007).

The Queen of football also finished runner-up in the World Cup in 2007. After Brazil’s elimination from the 2023 World Cup, the player declared that she had ended her participation in the World Cup. She is the top scorer in World Cups, among men and women, with 17 goals in five appearances since 2003. Next comes German Miroslav Klose, with 16 goals.
