Mariana disaster could generate compensation for Bahia – 03/04/2023 – Panel

The government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) intends to hold a new round of talks on the agreement for the Mariana disaster with the states involved and should include Bahia.
They have been part of the negotiations since the beginning Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, most affected by the collapse of the Vale dam in 2015, which left 19 dead. Studies, however, show that mining waste reached the corals of Abrolhos, in Bahia.
The Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa (PT), who has been coordinating the discussions in the federal government, has already held a first meeting with the ministers of the areas involved and proposed a new debate with the governors, including Bahia, which governed until the year past.
One of the alternatives would be for part of the resources provided for by Ibama to be directed towards the Abrolhos corals.
Participants in the negotiations fear that new demands will further delay the outcome of the agreement, which has been dragging on for years. But members of the government say that the situation in Bahia will not be treated as a battle horse, and will not be taken forward if it could jeopardize the signature.
