Jewels valued at approximately R$ 16 million were donated by the government of Saudi Arabia to the then first lady in 2021

Minister of Justice Flávio Dino said, on the night of this Friday (3), on social networks, that he will ask the Federal Police to investigate the attempt by the Jair Bolsonaro government (PL) to bring jewelry valued at R$ 16.5 million from abroad.

According to Dino, the fact could constitute crimes of embezzlement, embezzlement and money laundering, among other possible crimes. Still according to him, the facts will be taken to the PF next Monday (6).

“Facts related to jewelry, which may constitute crimes of embezzlement, embezzlement and money laundering, among other possible crimes, will be taken to the Federal Police for legal action. Office will follow on Monday”, he published.

According to a report by O Estado de S. Paulo, published on Friday night, the jewels brought illegally were gifts from the Saudi Arabian government to Michelle, who visited the Arab country in October 2021, accompanying the presidential entourage.

These are diamond ring, necklace, watch and earrings. The pieces were seized at customs at Guarulhos Airport, in São Paulo, in the backpack of an advisor to Bento Albuquerque, then Minister of Mines and Energy.

Bento went to the customs office when he learned about the seizure of the jewels and tried to use the post to release the diamonds. One of the arguments used by the then minister was that it was a gift from the Saudi Arabian government to Michelle Bolsonaro.

In Brazil, the law determines that all assets worth more than US$ 1,000 must be declared to the Federal Revenue Service. In this way, the agency’s agent retained the diamonds.

The Bolsonaro government would have tried four times to recover the jewels, through the ministries of Economy, Mines and Energy and Foreign Affairs.

In a fourth move to retrieve the objects, made three days after Bolsonaro left the government, a civil servant used a Brazilian Air Force (FAB) plane to travel to Guarulhos. The man would have identified himself as “Jairo” (this is Jairo da Silva, a sergeant in the Navy) and argued that no object from the previous government could be left to the next one.

Bolsonaro even sent a letter to the Federal Revenue office, requesting that the jewelry be destined for the Presidency of the Republic.
