Announcement

Manaus is the first city in the North of the country to apply for and receive international certification

Manaus (AM) – Manaus was officially announced as the “South American Sports City” of 2024 by the Aces Europe evaluation committee. With the recognition, Manaus City Hall wants to promote a virtuous circle, which includes attracting investments and partnerships also aimed at improving the local quality of life.

Manaus is the first city in the North of the country to apply for and receive international certification. The choice was announced at the closing dinner of the European Parliament’s technical visit last Thursday (26), at the Centro Cultural dos Povos da Amazônia.

In December, representatives from the city hall will go to Brussels, Belgium, to receive the award, along with the other 56 cities from European, Asian and African countries. The mayor of Manaus, David Almeida, highlighted that the award marks an important stage in the expansion of investments and new partnerships in sport.

“We are going to Brussels, at the European Parliament, to receive the award, and also seek investments so that we can expand everything that has been done in this city. For the first time, a city in the North is presenting itself to receive this award, and Manaus is certified with this award”,

celebrated Almeida.

The early announcement proves that Manaus fulfilled the prerequisites by showing the excellent work carried out in sport with Manaus society and achieved the necessary components to overcome competing cities.

“Manaus was chosen mainly due to the wishes of the Manaus Sport Foundation (FME), the mayor, the CEO, the sports team, who did everything to make us see what potential Manaus has. The anticipation happened, because you deserve it. It’s a unique culture in the world,”

said Portuguese Nuno Santos, president of the European Committee Commission.

Alexandre Maciel, head of FME, celebrated the certification and highlighted the work done together with the other municipal administration departments, which played a fundamental role in the candidacy process.

“Everything worked. A team effort. I want to thank everyone who committed themselves, from the Manaus Sport Foundation, Semed (Municipal Education Department), ManausCult (Municipal Culture, Tourism and Events Foundation), Semsa (Municipal Health Department). Everyone dedicated themselves very hard, and today Manaus is the South American City of Sports”,

he said.

Technical visit

The European Committee arrived in Manaus in the early hours of October 24th, the date of the city’s 354th anniversary. Throughout the week, the evaluators got to know the sports-related projects up close and visited some tourist attractions in Manaus to introduce them to Amazonian culture.
