Federal deputy Pastor Henrique Vieira (PSOL-RJ) says that the involvement of Silas Malafaia as the creator and organizer of the act with former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) on Avenida Paulista, in São Paulo, exposes the use of Christianity to try to ” purify” attacks against democracy that occurred in Brazil.

Founder of the Igreja Batista do Caminho, Vieira states that Bolsonarism does not respect the principles, pacts and limits that characterize a democracy — and that Malafaia repeats the feat by using his position as pastor to make, economically and morally, a manifestation of character viable. political-ideological.

“Malafaia mixes and invests all the resources he has — many of them, acquired through the management of people’s spirituality — to normalize, make acceptable and ideologically purify the Bolsonarist conspiracy against democracy”, says the PSOL parliamentarian in the column.

“It is evident, before our eyes, that religion is being used once again to sanctify coup plotters and to praise the anti-democratic strategies of the extreme right. It seems that, for Malafaia and his disciples, all kinds of games are worth playing, no matter how low in other words, to normalize the coup in the eyes of the entire Brazilian society”, he also says.

“It’s strategic cynicism in the name of religion”, adds the federal deputy and pastor.

The costs of the Bolsonarist event, scheduled for next Sunday (25), would initially be borne by the Associação Vitória em Cristo, founded by Malafaia. One day after announcing the resources, however, the leader of the Assembly of God Victory in Christ backed down.

“The Vitória em Cristo Association, which in its statutes provides that it can finance public demonstrations […] You won’t pay a cent. The responsibility is mine and personal”, wrote Malafaia, in a post on social media. The change took place amid criticism that the money that would be used to finance the pro-Bolsonaro act would have come from faithful.

“[Malafaia] purposefully mixes and confuses his position as a pastor, the religious logic of the Vitória em Cristo ministry and the spiritual appeal of his religious confession, shielding all these subjectivities with the shield of his association’s CNPJ”, says Vieira.

When contacted by the column, Malafaia says that the PSOL deputy adopts a “lying narrative” and criticizes the fact that Vieira is a religious leader aligned to the left.

“As he is a good little leftist, he is tamed by this lying narrative. And let him know that he forgot that the only thing that the Bible gives paternity to the devil is the lie”, says the pastor of Vitória em Cristo.

“What I admire is a pastor who calls himself a pastor supports an ideology and supports Lula, who says he is proud to be a communist. Communists killed millions of Christians around the world”, he continues. “I wanted to know what kind of pastor he was,” he says. “It goes against the principles of the gospel”, he concludes.

Bolsonaro called supporters for the event on Avenida Paulista amid investigations by the Federal Police, which is investigating an attempted coup d’état to keep the then president in power.

In the video that began circulating among allies on the 12th of this month, Bolsonaro asks supporters not to carry banners and posters against anyone and speaks of an act of support for the democratic rule of law.
