The president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Luís Roberto Barroso, avoided commenting on President Lula’s statements about comparing Israel’s attacks to the extermination of Jews in the Holocaust.
In an interview with GloboNewsBarroso did not want to express opinions, but said that the extermination of Jews in the Holocaust is a topic that needs to be treated “with ceremony” and “respect”, and cannot be “trivialized”.
“It is a subject that has to be treated with great ceremony and not be trivialized. I’m not going to get into the issue of the president’s comment, it’s not my role. But, for those who saw and know the people I know, saw the scenes, visited the Holocaust Museum, I went to Auschwitz, it is impossible to evaluate the barbarity of that. It wasn’t war, that was deeper inhumanity,” Barroso told GloboNews.
The minister recognized Hamas as a “terrorist” group, and highlighted that what is happening in the Middle East is a “war”.
“It is possible to have a harshly critical view of Benjamin Netanyahu’s policies, if one wants to. But it is a war, it is not an exercise in dehumanization. Possibly the most shocking thing I have ever seen was Auschwitz. You leave there and [leva] days to recover from that energy of what happened there. So, I would treat it with great respect and seriousness”, concluded Barroso.
