Publications were made during the 2022 election campaign

The plenary session of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) unanimously fined deputy Carla Zambelli (PL-SP) R$30,000 for spreading false news about the electoral process and the e-Título application.

The ministers found the deputy guilty of irregular electoral propaganda on the internet. The publications were made during the 2022 electoral campaign on the parliamentarian’s social networks and said that the QR Code on the digital voter registration card, when read, would count votes for the then presidential candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The removal of the publications was determined at the time by minister Raul Araújo. This Tuesday (20), the ministers judged the merit of the deputy’s conduct. The rapporteur, minister Floriano de Azevedo Marques, highlighted that the value of the fine took into account “the recurrence of conduct”.

Minister Cármen Lúcia drew attention to Zambelli’s behavior. “The person knows they cannot adopt the behavior, they know it is false and, even so, they propagate it with a very specific intent,” she highlighted.

Only minister Nunes Marques voted for the fine to be halved, at R$ 15 thousand, but he was defeated.

Agência Brasil contacted Carla Zambelli’s advisors, but has not yet heard back.
