Macapá 266th Anniversary Street Race brings together 2,000 competitors – News of Brazil

Among professional athletes, sports enthusiasts and People with Disabilities (PWDs), Macapá City Hall promoted, this Sunday (4), the traditional Street Race of the capital’s 266th Anniversary. With the start scheduled at 6am, participants arrived early at the concentration in Complexo do Araxá.

In the category of excitement, willpower and persistence, the event was a complete success. It was a 7 km route and all 2,000 participants received an official t-shirt and medal.

The mayor of Macapá, Dr. Furlan, was at the race and spoke of his satisfaction in seeing the general public participate in yet another event celebrating the city’s anniversary.

“It is satisfying to see everyone participating in this celebration, which brings together people of all ages. It is municipal management showing commitment to citizens, providing well-being and joy to participants”, highlighted the Chief Executive.

Excited about the opportunity to participate in the race, the couple Alberto and Tânia Barbosa came from far away and arrived early to warm up and prepare to run. “I got the family out of bed early so we could be the first to arrive. I brought my husband and my son. With each passing year, we enjoy participating more”, declared Tânia.

The categories were: GENERAL, WHEELCHAIR MANAGEMENT and VISUALLY IMPAIRED, in male and female genders. The first placed in each group received trophies and medals, as well as cash prizes. The Municipal Department of Sports and Leisure (Semel) was responsible for the organization.

José Maria Almeida was first placed in the general category, having completed the race in 21 minutes and 32 seconds, a difference of just 18 seconds compared to second placed, Aldair Nascimento.

In the women’s category, Lenise da Silva stood out on the podium with a time of 26 minutes 33 seconds, followed by Cleidiani Gama who occupied second place.

José Maria and Lenise thanked them for the opportunity to participate in the event. “We are grateful for the importance that management is giving to sport and leisure. Participating in another race has great value for me and certainly for many who ran”, concluded José Maria.

To organize traffic, cleaning and security, the race included a task force from the Municipal Guard, Urban Janitor and Macapá Transit and Transport Company (CTMac)

For Semel’s secretary, Bruno Igreja, the race served to reaffirm the importance of inclusion in sport. “The competition is also aimed at people with disabilities. We work on inclusion and well-being at the event, as it is a way where everyone has the opportunity to participate”he commented.

The athletes highlighted the positive aspects of the race. For Cirley Souza, third place in the visually impaired category, the competition highlighted her credibility. “It is a time to demonstrate affection and dedication towards athletes with disabilities, giving participants of all ages and disciplines the opportunity to compete”said the competitor.

The five best placed in the general men’s and women’s 7km category were awarded cash prizes, in the amounts of R$1,500 and R$750, R$400, R$200 and R$150 respectively.

Furthermore, the first placed in the general male and female categories received trophies and medals.
