President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is expected to define later this year who will preside over COP 30, which will take place in 2025 in Belém (PA).
The decision is important to signal the priorities that Brazil intends to defend at the conference, as the president has great importance in dictating the pace of work.
Two names emerge as the strongest possibilities: Finance Minister Fernando Haddad, responsible for the green economy agenda, and Marina Silva, from the Environment, who would be more pleasing to environmentalists.
One possibility is for the two to share the post, signaling that the government sees the economic and preservation agendas as inseparable.
At the recent COP 28, held in Dubai, the choice of president generated controversy. The choice fell on Sultan Al-Jaber, who is also the president of the local oil company and even questioned the scientific consensus on global warming.
