Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), released this Sunday (7) an assessment of the actions related to the acts of January 8, which complete one year this Monday (8). He is the rapporteur of the actions involving the acts that resulted in the invasion and depredation of the headquarters of the Three Powers in Brasília.
According to the document, the minister made more than 6 thousand decisions related to the acts. Among the 6,204 decisions issued, 255 were related to searches and seizures and 350 breaches of banking and telematic secrecy, which resulted in 800 investigations
Throughout the year, the minister also decreed 81 preventive arrests, the result of investigations by the Federal Police (PF), in addition to several analyzes of the renewal of these detentions. According to the report, in December 2023, 70 people remained in prison.
The balance sheet also includes Moraes’ actions shortly after the invasion of the headquarters of the Three Powers. Among the decisions, the removal of Ibaneis Rocha (MDB) from the position of governor of the Federal District, the arrest of the leadership of the Military Police of the Federal District and the dissolution of the camps formed in front of the military headquarters stand out.
In one year, 30 trials and convictions of people who participated in the attack were carried out. Penalties reach up to 17 years in prison. Another 146 criminal cases already have a scheduled trial date and should take place by April 2024.
Since the beginning of the trials, Moraes has been the target of criticism in the conduct of the January 8 processes. Last Wednesday (3), he stated that the defendants had the right to “broad defense”.
