When speaking at the launch of the Petrobras Cultural program, in Rio de Janeiro, this Friday (23), the president classified the military conflict as genocide and held the Israeli government responsible for the slaughter that has already killed around 30 thousand civilians, mainly women and men. Palestinian children.

“I want to tell you now: I will not exchange my dignity for falsehood. I want to tell you that I am in favor of the creation of a free and sovereign Palestinian State. May this Palestinian State live in harmony with the State of Israel. And I want to say more: what the Israeli government is doing against the Palestinian people is not war, it is genocide, because it is killing women and children”,

said the president.

“Don’t try to interpret the interview I gave in Ethiopia. Read the interview instead of judging me based on what the Prime Minister of Israel said. There are thousands of dead and missing children. And soldiers are not dying, women and children are dying in hospitals. If this is not genocide, I don’t know what genocide is”, continued Lula, referring to the statement made last Sunday (18), in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, when he compared Israel’s action in Gaza to what Adolf Hitler had promoted against Jews in World War II.

At the time, the comment made the Israeli government declare Lula persona non grata in the country. In response, the Brazilian government recalled the ambassador to Tel Aviv “for consultations”. Furthermore, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, criticized the Israeli government’s chancellor, Israel Katz, for statements made in recent days about President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Hypocrisy

The president also stated that the Brazilian government is working towards reform of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, which includes permanent representations from countries in Latin America, Africa, India and other nations. He also criticized the United States government’s vetoes of UN resolutions for a ceasefire in Gaza and, without naming names, called the political class “hypocritical” for its inaction in the face of ongoing conflicts.

“Only when we have advice [de segurança] of a democratic UN, with more political representation, and only when the political class stops being hypocrites, only when it faces the truths. It is not possible for people not to understand what is happening in Gaza. It is not possible for people not to be sensitive to millions of children who go to bed hungry every single day, because they do not have a glass of milk, despite the world producing excess food,” he said.

The president called for more politics to resolve wars. “It is important that people know while there is still time to know. We need to be aware that what exists in the world today is a lot of hypocrisy and little politics. We cannot accept war in Ukraine, just as we cannot accept war in Gaza, as we cannot accept any war”, he concluded.
