President Lula (PT) criticized, this Wednesday (20), the possibility of former player Daniel Alves obtaining parole on bail.
Alongside First Lady Rosângela Lula da Silva, known as Janja, Lula said that the maxim in force in the past, in the Northeast, is still in force.
“We now know that Daniel Alves can be released if he pays something,” he said.
And he added: “I learned there in Pernambuco that people said ‘here in the Northeast, anyone who has 20 contos de réis’ doesn’t get arrested. That maxim continues.”
At that moment, Janja whispered in her husband’s ear that this was a crime. Lula repeated: “This is a crime. The money that Daniel Alves has, the money that someone may have, cannot buy the dignity of the offense that a man does to a woman by committing rape”, she stated.
The former Brazilian player, sentenced to four and a half years in prison for the rape of a 23-year-old girl in a nightclub in Barcelona, could be provisionally released if he pays bail of 1 million euros, equivalent to R$5.5 million.
By 2 votes to 1, the Barcelona Court partially agreed with Alves’ defense request to release him, pending the final sentence. The notification was given shortly before 12 pm (8 am in Brazil).
Lula also once again called the Israeli government’s actions in the Gaza Strip genocide.
He stated that, in the same way that Hamas’ terrorist acts are condemned, “it is not possible that we are witnessing carnage night and day.” “Where’s the UN?” he asked.
The president participated in a dinner celebrating PT’s 44th anniversary, completed in February.
According to PT members, Janja collaborated in organizing the event, having also suggested the dinner’s attraction, the singer Tereza Cristina.
Party ministers and parliamentarians were at the convention center in Brasília. The invitations were sold for R$350, R$5,000 and R$20,000.
At the event, the movement “In every corner, a happier Brazil” was launched with the aim of building a platform for municipal elections.
