The president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), decided to discuss on Thursday night (21), when the lights went out, the urgent request for the project that regulates sports betting. The urgency request was approved by 337 to 115.

With the urgency approved, the text began to be deliberated in the session, the discussion and voting should last until dawn.

“If we don’t vote on the regulations, the games, tournaments and events will no longer exist, they exist in the real world, and we are trying to regulate and speed things up to prevent money laundering and ensure they occur in accordance with the law,” said Lira.

Deputies from the evangelical bench criticized the president’s attitude and asked for the proposal to be deliberated in February of next year, so that the text can be improved, and not bring risks to the Brazilian population such as gambling, addictions and corruption. “This government and PT project only has the interest of collecting money from other people’s misfortunes”, said one of the deputies.

Parliamentarians opposed to the project fear the risks that this proposal could bring to Brazilian families, especially due to “ludopathy”. and virtual games with programmed risks. This is another drug thrown into the lap of the population”, declared deputy Rodolfo Nogueira (PL-MS).

The government has defended the regulation, as the amounts collected will help the government meet the fiscal target of zero deficit scheduled for 2024.

The proposal under analysis maintains the Senate text, allowing internet betting related to the results of real sporting events, but prohibiting the existence of certain types of online casinos. The proposal had already been approved by the Chamber in September, but, after changes in the Senate, it had to be returned for new evaluation by deputies.

The opinion of the rapporteur, deputy Adolfo Viana (PSDB-BA), reestablished the authorization of betting for virtual online gaming events. This point had been overturned by the Senate.

The proposal is discussed amid the controversy surrounding the Blaze betting site, the target of investigations by the police for not paying bettors the prizes in games such as “Crash”, also known as the “Jogo do Aviãozinho”, and the “Game of Tigrinho”. These games are illegal in Brazil, as are others from Blaze.
