In cases of taking the shirt off, football rules require the referee to give the player a yellow card. However, the judge Pol van Boekel communicated to Kudus that he would make an exception and did not warn the athlete, who finished the game without being yellowed.

After the match, Kudus was asked about the referee’s decision and the dialogue he had with Pol van Boekel after not receiving a yellow card for taking his shirt off.

“I know there are rules in football, but this is bigger than football. We’re talking life and death here. The referee told me that lifting the uniform is not allowed, but that he understood the situation, because it was something bigger than football. I respect the referee a lot for having understood the situation so well – he said.

The body of attacking midfielder Christian Atsu was found in the rubble of the luxury apartment, in a 12-story tower, where he lived after the earthquake in Turkey.

Atsu, 31, has spells with the Ghana national team. The player was unveiled in Porto and played for clubs in England, Holland and Saudi Arabia before heading to Turkish football.

There were initial reports that the player had been rescued alive a day after the disaster. However, there was a misidentification and coach Volkan Demirel stated that Atsu had yet to be found.
