Brazilian judo won bronze and silver at the Portuguese Grand Prix (GP), the first competition of the Olympic year. In the city of Odivelas, this Sunday (28), the last day of the GP, light heavyweight Rafael Buzacarini won bronze by defeating Serbian Bojan Dosen on penalties (3-2). Last Friday (26), Michel Augusto, 19 years old, was already runner-up on the Portuguese mat. Both added precious points in the Olympic ranking for the Paris Games.

“I’m very happy to start the year with a medal on my chest. I had a great competition. The preparation there at Mittersill training [Áustria] it was essential. This gives me much more happiness, motivation to continue. There is much more competition ahead. Starting off on the right foot is great”celebrated Buzacarini, who scored 350 points (third place) in the Olympic ranking.

The first Brazilian to stand on the podium at the Portuguese GP was Michel Augusto, 19-year-old MIchelzinho, champion at the Pan-American Games in Santiago (Chile), last year. After scoring consecutive victories until reaching the final – one of them was in the round of 16, when he defeated the top seed Ariunbold Enkhtaivan (Mongolia), runner-up in the 2022 world champion – Michel Augusto could not resist the Uzbek Dilshodbek Baratov in the final, silver at the Doha World Cup 2023.

With second place on the podium, Michelzinho added 490 points in the ranking and entered the classification zone for Paris 2024, alongside Matheus Takaki, also in the 60kg category. The Brazilian delegation’s next commitment will be at the Paris Grand Prix, starting next Friday (2).

Keeping an eye on Paris 2024

The totaling of points in the International Judo Federation (IJF) ranking began in July 2022 and only ends in June this year. The sport will bring together 372 athletes in Paris (equally divided between men and women). The top 17 in the rankings in each category secure a place in Paris 2024 (with a limit of one judoka per country). From 18th place in the ranking, vacancies will be distributed by continent: Americas (21 vacancies), Africa (24), Europe (25), Asia (20) and Oceania (10).
