Judo: Brazil ends Grand Slam in Baku with two medals – News of Brazil

Brazil ended the judo Grand Slam in Baku (Azerbaijan) with two medals last Sunday (24), a gold from Beatriz Souza in the women’s heavy category and a bronze from Mayra Aguiar in the light heavyweight category.

Beatriz, who has just become Pan-American champion, flew straight from Canada to Azerbaijan to compete in her first competition on the International Judo Federation circuit after winning bronze at the World Championships in Doha.

In Baku, the Brazilian debuted with an ippon victory over Kazakh Nazgul Maratova, then beat Italian Asia Tavano with two waza-ari. In the semifinals, Beatriz beat the Japanese Sarah Asahina. In the decision she beat Brazilian Rochele Nunes, who currently defends Portugal.

With Braatriz and Mayra’s medals, Brazil came in sixth place in the overall medal table, led by Azerbaijan, which won 3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Georgia, Japan, Italy and Kosovo, respectively, completed the top 6.
